[This is a little overdue on his part, but...]

Ms Starr, do you have a minute? I'd like to speak in person, if that's all right.

I appreciate it.

[A few seconds later, he'll portal in wherever she's at. (He did not first ask where she's at.) His stride lacks its usual driven swagger, and his overall manner seems... chastened. For both obvious and less-obvious reasons, he is very, very unhappy with himself right now.

He doesn't say anything at first, just takes a deep breath. When he does speak, though, he cuts to the chase.]

... I owe you an apology.

[Wait, shit, this is not her office. Qubit is only slightly less surprised at this development than she is.

... Oh, right. It's Sunday, isn't it. Why would she be in her office on a Sunday?]

Ah. Strike that, two apologies.

[At least the question is easy to answer, though. He points at his computerwatch.] Teleportals. I thought you knew about them.

[The only question now is who's going to maul him worse, the cat or Karen. He puts his hands up defensively.]

I don't! Look, I - it uses intuitive targeting. Semi-psionic. To an extent, it can lock on without needing exact coordinates. When you said you had a minute, I assumed you meant now was fine. That's my fault, I should have asked.

[He thought now was fine! Qubit runs a hand through his hair, exhaling deeply. Well thank you for not defenestrating him for this, either.]

Right. Uh... This was about me, apologizing. And not just for 'porting into your apartment, obviously, though I apologize for that, too.

[See that kind of thing is why he doesn't bother with a secret identity. To be fair, he has also been helping fix the stuff he broke, but he can't fix everything, and it doesn't exactly make up for breaking it in the first place. It's kind of a metaphor for his life.]

I know. I know. I'm sorry. I made a bad call, and it backfired atrociously.

Thank you, but... that's not all of it.

[He starts pacing, restless. This is actually the part that bugs him the most.]

When I asked to use your facilities, it was with the expectation that this would be a short-term project. A month, month and a half, tops. I thought... I honestly thought that was all it would take. I've done this countless times before. And I've gone over the results again and again and - it should have worked, Karen. [His tone is just shy of desperate, like he'd insist that even if his life depended on renouncing it.] There wasn't a crossed wire or a hair out of place. The numbers were solid. The running theory is interference from the other Porter - incidental, deliberate, doesn't matter - but I can't for the life of me find where it's happening. I -

[He catches himself rambling at about the same time he runs out of breath, and he takes a deep one before continuing, holding up one finger to signal there is a point here, I'm getting to it.]

... I'm realizing, now, that this is going to take longer than I planned. Possibly a lot longer. And I want to apologize for... for that.

["That" is hard to put concise words to. For the optimistic timeframe, for taking up space, for getting anyone's hopes up. For believing he'd succeed so easily when others at his level have tried and failed. For thinking he was the exception.]

[He's only mildly surprised to hear that, but-] Electrocute? Good lord.

I can imagine. [It brings to mind some questions about Lachesis, but - this isn't really the time or place. He clears his throat and gets back on track.]

Anyway. Given that I'm... going to be here a while... I have to start taking into account living expenses. [Both of these are things he's incredibly reluctant to admit.] Not that I'm asking for a handout, of course not. But green tech is a longtime focus of mine, as I've mentioned - both my own designs, and those I've picked up in my travels - and I'd be more than willing to lend your people my expertise.

[It's called a "job," Qubit. You can say "job." There is no shame in needing food to live, or exchanging work for money.]

[Ah... She's right, of course, but he can't exactly Ctrl+Z the flubbed entrance, and he's not going to need to ask less by putting off the request. Immer geradeaus.]

Well, for one, we already know each other. [Sort of. We're acquainted. Close enough, right?] You've seen my work ethic, I'm there 80% of the time already.

But... more than convenience. If I'm going to be doing the whole nine-to-five thing, I'd prefer to spend it doing something worthwhile. Something that's to the good, that can actually make a positive difference here. From what I've seen of Starrware, that's what you do. And - honestly, I'd be proud to be a part of it, if you'll let me.
